I’ve learned a lot here by talking about food: with friends, at markets, in bars, in the sociedad gastronomica (a fantastic Basque institution which can only be translated by explanation), and by watching cooking shows with local stars like Karlos Arguiñano and David de Jorge. I even met David a few summers ago while buying fruit and vegetables:

So now I can introduce you to one of English-speaking world’s celebrity chefs: Jamie Oliver. He’s English (good chance to hear a different accent) and focuses on teaching people to incorporate fresh, healthy food into their diet (check out his TED Talk if you’re interested). So let’s talk about cooking. Check out a recipe on Jamie’s YouTube channel. There are tons of options: soupsinternational cuisinevegetariandesserts, you name it. Watch the video (or watch a few). What techniques does the chef use? What ingredients – anything exotic? Where can you find it? Is this something you’d try at home? Here’s an example:
I watched this video for Thai Massaman Curry.

What techniques?
Toast (cook with low, dry heat)
Grind (make a powder of)
Chop (cut into large pieces)

Exotic ingredients?
Lemongrass
Galangal
Tamarind Paste

Where can I get them?
Maybe at the Chinese grocery store in Egia.

Something I’d try?
Maybe this weekend!
